As I was summoned home to help stick the beans we planted a few weeks ago, it became readily apparent that my parents have very different approaches to gardening instruction. Mama (who is the only true gardener in the family) offers step-by-step direction and hands-on demonstrations ("wrap the twine like this, and then like that, and then you tie it right here, but now watch out for that barbed wire"), with follow-up critiques. ("See how that cane wiggles? You better tie that again.") Daddy, from his position under a shade tree, offers this: "You go on and get started. We'll let you know if you do something wrong."

Junior is always willing to help and sometimes I'm amazed by his wisdom!
But you can't help but love him.
