I can't remember oversleeping for anything since I was in college—and we won't talk about how long ago that was—and yet I have a fear of oversleeping, especially when I'm responsible for getting the turkey and dressing properly cooked and delivered to Mama's. I needed to get up at 5. I've been wide awake since at least 3. So I've had some time to think—mostly about how my mother and grandmother even FOUND a turkey big enough to feed our whole clan when I was a kid. There must've been close to 40 people for Thanksgiving back then. All of my aunts would bring covered dishes and desserts. The big electric coffee urn would be running like a train all day. And the front porch and dining room were never empty or silent. I don't have a clue how Mama seated everybody. Remember that scene in Harry Potter, where Mr. Weasley puts up this tiny little tent, but then they all go inside and it's magically huge on the inside? I think Grandme's house was like that. Somehow it just seemed to expand to accommodate everybody who wanted to be there. We're expecting a much smaller crowd today. But the spirit of Thanksgiving will be the same. We'll be together. We'll be thankful. We'll be home. Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving, sweet cuz!
