Did you ever get an unexpected flash of memory—a quick, out-of-the-blue recall of a moment you didn't even consider significant at the time? Just the other day, I got this flash of a beach trip Dave and I took—can't remember when since the Gulf Coast is the ONLY place we go, left to our own devices. I had gotten ready for dinner first, and I was waiting for him by the pool at our hotel, which was surrounded by palm trees. It was dark out, and one of those summer coastal storms was trying to blow in. I LOVED the sound of all those palms rustling in the wind. I remember thinking I could happily sit there all night and listen to it. Dave and I both have a "separated at birth" relationship with the Gulf. We just feel like we belong there.
Of course, there's the minor matter of the gazillion dollars it would take to live on that beautiful water. And we love our Birmingham neighborhood, too. So we have compromised. We planted bananas and palm trees in our garden this summer. We're also building our version of the French Quarter in our back yard so we can pretend we're just a block or two off Royal. As for Hank the Cat? He's just happy for a new place to nap.
