Earlier this week, I took my mother for a checkup with her cardiologist, who just moved into a sleek new, state-of-the-art clinic with lots of chrome and glass and technology all over the place. When you check in at a desk near the front entrance, they hand you one of those round, light-up buzzers just like the ones Olive Garden gives you to alert you when your table's ready (only this one alerts you when it's time for your EKG or your conference with the doctor). We were both pretty impressed. When they buzzed her the first time, I took a seat right outside the testing area. As she came back out, she stopped in her tracks, buzzer in hand, and took another look around. "Why, I feel like I'm in outer space!" she said. "This is like something outta Star Trek." I motioned her to an empty seat next to me. "Well, bring that buzzer with you and have a seat," I said. "I think Scotty's gonna beam us up when the doctor's ready to see us."
EPILOGUE: Scotty must've had the day off, but they did eventually buzz Mama for her conference with the doctor, at which point she gave me the "watch my stuff" directive so she wouldn't have to lug her purse, coat, and umbrella with her. On the way home, I got the full report. On her health? "Everything's fine." On her cardiologist, who's a terrific doctor with a great bedside manner? "Did you know he didn't grow up here? He's from south Georgia, and I told him my daddy's people came from there. And he said, 'Really?' And then I asked him if he likes his new office and he says he does. And I said I'll bet that drive back to the hospital can be tough. And he said . . ."
Doc, you have no idea who you're dealing with. I'll bet she got the names of your parents and grandparents and all your first cousins; she knows where you go to church and whether you and your wife sing in the choir; she knows if you have a dog or a cat and whether Fido or Fluffy is well-behaved; and she probably jotted down your birthday so she can put it on her calendar and send you a card. It will come from Lifeways and will carry a reminder that God loves you:)
WONDERFUL ! ! ! !
I just wish I had some of Auntie's personality and memory ! !
Hugs to you alllll ! ! !
