Have you taken any Facebook quizzes lately? If so, then you have likely determined your hippie name, the color of your aura, and the American state which most suits your personality. (Mine was Oregon, which makes absolutely no sense. I must’ve lied about some of my answers.) Why, oh why, would anybody waste time with computerized personality quizzes? Because . . .
A) They’re sometimes fun and generally harmless
B) We’re all trying to figure out ourselves/our world
C) They’re an excuse to temporarily avoid a more difficult task
D) All of the above
If you answered “D,” you are correct! (Plus, your aura is a peaceful blue, and you belong on the Gulf Coast. You’re welcome.)
Questions, questions, questions—about myself, about the world around me, about my place in it . . . The older I get, the more of them I have. Then again, maybe that’s not true. Maybe it’s just that the older I get, the more specific those questions become and the more difficult they are to answer. As a kid, my vocational concerns were somewhat broad: “Do I want to sing in a rock band or would I rather be a nurse?” Now they’re more pointed: “Will anybody ever want to read this thing I’ve just written?”
As for questions about the world around me, I’m finding it hard to keep up. News headlines make me want to hide my head under the covers. They’re generally horrific. And pop culture? I looked at a copy of People magazine in the doctor’s office the other day and realized I no longer recognize the people in People. Were it not for Brooke Shields, I would’ve been completely lost. Until the Super Bowl, not only was I unaware that Katy Perry was feuding with Taylor Swift, but I had no idea what either of them sounded like. (As it turns out, I had heard their music—just didn’t know who I was listening to over the sound system at the gym. But if I were on American Bandstand, I would give Katy and Taylor respectable Rate-a-Record scores. GEEZER ALERT!! GEEZER ALERT!! “It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.”)
So . . . with all the quiz questions swirling in our heads, which ones do we really need to answer?
A) Will Katy and Taylor ever make peace?
B) Which Brady Bunch character am I most like?
C) Who do I love, who can I count on, where does my hope lie,
and what good can I do for the people around me?
If you answered "C" . . . congratulations:)
These things I have spoken to you,
that in Me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation;
but be of good cheer,
I have overcome the world.”
