Trying one more time to post the post that wouldn't post last week. It was all about little things that can make a big difference. I saw it happen every day while Daddy was in the hospital and in the days when we were preparing for that stay:
A sweet friend turned a tense waiting room into a family reunion with a care package of thoughtfully (and lovingly) prepared snacks we could all share together.
A surgeon had the sensitivity and compassion to recognize that what is a typical workday for him is once-in-a-lifetime for the rest of us, and he took the time to explain, encourage, and reassure.
An angel of a nurse brought peace into the room by saying, "I know you're hurting and you don't understand what's happening to you, but I prayed for you before I came into this room; I'll pray for you when I leave this room; and I'll keep on praying for you after you leave this hospital because God called me to do this."
Especially now, so much of what we hear on TV or read on the internet makes the world seem hopelessly mean. All any of us can do is . . . what we can do. I can't fix the health care system, but I can make hospital snacks for a friend or encourage (and thank!) the doctors and nurses who make some of the worst days of our lives just a little bit better. I can't bring about world peace, but I can offer personal peace to a friend who's going through a rough time and needs a shoulder to cry on. All those drops in the bucket add up. We can't do everything—but we can do something.
