It doesn’t take a lot to do a lot. A single candle can bring enough light to break through the scary unknown of a dark room. It may not illuminate the whole space, but it’ll give you enough visibility to take one step and then another.
I think we’re all going through a time that forces us to do that—take one step and then another—because there are too many unknowns for big strides. It’s pretty dark out there, and we don’t have a flashlight. We have a candle. But that can be enough. We just have to take each day in small steps instead of giant leaps.
That’s hard when you’re coping with sorrow and loss and disappointment. You want to move past them. You want to see beyond them. Doing that is unusually difficult right now, and we have to give our situation its due. The emotional tidal wave that might hit you from time to time is not just your imagination. It’s not all in your head. We’re living through some extraordinary circumstances that can make all of us feel overwhelmed and alone, but we really aren’t. We just need to remind ourselves of that every day and find ways to show the people we care about—and total strangers that we pass in the grocery store—that they aren’t alone either.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.
Isaiah 9:2
Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness,
who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge
of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6
